EAST 57TH STREET - PENTHOUSE

A Cosmic Space

This 4,600 square foot loft apartment overlooks the Queensborough Bridge with dynamic views up and down Manhattan, the East River and Central Park. The building, designed by SOM, is an observation space within the clouds. We reconfigured the existing traditional plan by removing walls to allow for a vast open floor plan with programmed spaces flowing into each other. Minimal walls and expansive spaces allow the client to feel like part of the sky on the days when the clouds can be seen through the glass walls on all three sides of the apartment.

The three black semi-recessed lighting layouts based on different constellations reinforce the client’s connection to the sky and natural elements, which is also represented in the client’s personal collection of natural woods and artifacts. The  client’s collection of natural wood artifacts, the minimal palette and built-in floor to ceiling cabinetry reduce visual clutter so that the view and the collections can be the stars of the apartment.
